A talk and roundtable on climate change mitigation and circular economy was held April 21 by Taiwan and the Czech Republic as part of jointly staged activities on the eve of Earth Day.
Organized by Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Prague and the Czech capital's local government, the event involved Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu, officials from Taiwan's Cabinet-level Environmental Protection Administration, Prague Mayor Zdenek Hrib, former Czechia Environment Minister Martin Bursik and representatives of nongovernmental organizations.
Topics discussed spanned carbon emission reduction policies, organic waste treatment and smart city development, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In a video address, Wu said climate change is an environmental issue impacting international peace and security. Taiwan will leave no stone unturned in advancing related initiatives with the Czech Republic based on the two sides’ comprehensive democratic partnership, he added.
Wu also took the opportunity to laud Hrib’s efforts in working with the capital cities of Hungary, Poland and Slovakia in support of the EU’s green policies. Taiwan is committed to developing clean energy infrastructure like offshore wind farms, and will strengthen the two side’ partnership in this regard, he said.
Echoing Wu's remarks, Hrib said borderless collaboration in climate governance is the way forward, and he is excited at the prospect of sharing relevant experiences with the public and private sectors in Taiwan.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “#Taiwan & the #CzechRepublic got #EarthDay underway with a talk & roundtable on climate change mitigation & circular economy. Minister Wu & @ZdenekHrib headlined the event featuring our EPA officials & ex-#Czechia Environment Minister Bursik. The future must be clean & green!”
