The visit to Taiwan by a U.S. delegation consisting of former Sen. Christopher Dodd as well as ex-Deputy Secretaries of State Richard Armitage and James Steinberg was a complete success, paving the way for closer partnership with the U.S. across the board, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs April 16.
The bipartisan group met with President Tsai Ing-wen, Premier Su Tseng-chang, MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu and Minister of Defense Chiu Kuo-cheng. The visit included numerous opportunities to exchange ideas on a variety of mutual concerns, the ministry said.
The MOFA expressed heartfelt gratitude to the U.S. administration under President Joe Biden as well as the delegation for their rock-solid backing of Taiwan. The government will continue to maintain a close partnership with the U.S. while promoting global cooperation, it added.
Dodd and members of the delegation said this year marked the 42nd anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act. The visit reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to Taiwan as well as strengthening the bilateral friendship based on shared values, they added.
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said: “The visit of @SenChrisDodd & ex-@StateDept Deputy Secretaries Armitage & Steinberg was a success! We thank our friends for strengthening the #Taiwan-#US partnership. We also thank the @JoeBiden administration for its support & anticipate even closer cooperation going forward.”
