MOFA welcomes US delegation’s Taiwan visit

The visit of former Sen. Christopher Dodd, ex-Deputy Secretaries of State Richard Armitage and James Steinberg, and the accompanying U.S. delegation is warmly welcomed by the government and people, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs April 14.
 
Sent by U.S. President Joe Biden, the bipartisan group was met upon deplaning by MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu at Taipei Songshan Airport. The three-day itinerary includes an audience with President Tsai Ing-wen, as well as a meeting with Premier Su Tseng-chang, to exchange ideas on issues of mutual concern and overlapping interests.
 
Dodd, Armitage and Steinberg are respected political veterans and staunch supporters of Taiwan, the MOFA said. The former—a close friend of Biden—played a key role in the Taiwan Relations Act’s legislative process, while the latter two served in the administrations of Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, the ministry added.
 
The MOFA said the visit reaffirms the strength of Taiwan-U.S. relations and augurs well for the enduring partnership. No effort will be spared in deepening friendship, expanding exchanges and increasing interaction between officials at all levels from the two sides, the ministry added.
 
In a tweet on its official Twitter account, the MOFA said “Minister Wu greeted @SenChrisDodd & former @StateDept Deputy Secretaries Richard Armitage & James Steinberg upon arrival in #Taipei. The presence of the statesmen & friends of #Taiwan is a strong vote of #US confidence in the country & its freedom- & democracy-loving people.”
