MOFA vows to deepen Taiwan-Europe ties through scholarship program
2021/03/31
Taiwan is committed to advancing its academic and cultural ties with Europe through the Taiwan-Europe Connectivity Scholarship program, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs March 26.
Springboarding off the success of the historic visit to Taiwan by Czech Republic Senate President Milos Vystrcil and his delegation, the Mandarin scholarship program was first launched for Czech students by the MOFA and seven local universities last year, the ministry said. To date, 11 participants have arrived and enrolled in National Chengchi University in Taipei City and National Sun Yat-sen University in the southern city of Kaohsiung, the ministry added.
A reception for recipients to share their experiences in the country was held by the ministry March 26 in Taipei, the MOFA said. Attendees of the event included MOFA Deputy Minister Harry Ho-jen Tseng and Prague Mayor Zdenek Hrib, who joined virtually.
Tseng lauded Taiwan as the best place in the world to learn Mandarin. The program fosters a deeper understanding of the country’s culture, economy, history, language, society and politics among scholarship recipients and strengthens ties between Taiwan and Europe, he said.
According to Hrib, Czech students can enjoy a safe and rewarding time in Taiwan based on the two sides’ shared values of freedom, democracy and rule of law.
Hrib, who took part in a study abroad program in Taiwan 15 years ago, was part of the 89-member delegation from the Czech Republic led by Vystrcil last year. The trip resulted in the signing of three memoranda of understanding on cooperation in the fields of artificial intelligence, smart machinery and startups.
