President Tsai Ing-wen said March 23 that the government is committed to ensuring access to high-quality medical care for ROC (Taiwan) service members, spotlighting the tireless efforts of military hospitals in safeguarding the health of the country’s fighting men and women.
Military hospitals are on the front lines of national defense, Tsai said. Institutions like Tri-Service General Hospital’s Songshan Branch are responsible for meeting the needs of soldiers across the nation, such as by performing physical exams and providing expert consultations, she added.
This dedication to excellence extends to the realms of emergency response and disaster relief, with military hospitals making outstanding contributions during the 921 Earthquake in 1999, severe acute respiratory syndrome outbreak in 2003 and ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, she said.
Tsai made the remarks at the ground-breaking ceremony for a new center of aviation medicine at TSGH in Taipei City.
According to Tsai, the development will accommodate more equipment and help strengthen medical R&D. It ensures TSGH is fully equipped to deal with all eventualities, with pilots having access to dedicated units for acute injuries, chronic conditions and intensive care, she said.
Tsai also took the opportunity to express condolences on behalf of the government and people to the family of 1st Lt. Lo Shang-hua, who was killed when two F-5 jet trainers collided March 22 off the coast of southern Taiwan’s Pingtung County. The search for missing Capt. Pan Ying-chun is ongoing, she added.
