President Tsai vows to cement Taiwan’s role in global supply chains
2021/03/23
President Tsai Ing-wen said March 20 that ensuring smooth energy transition remains a cornerstone of the government’s approach to cementing the position of Taiwan industries in realigned global supply chains.
The government is leaving no stone unturned in its efforts to create a more robust and resilient business environment in Taiwan, including attracting overseas investments, expanding domestic demand and fast-tracking infrastructure development as the world moves towards the post-pandemic era, Tsai said. The Taiwan Model reduced the impact of the pandemic and laid the foundations for projected economic growth of over 4 percent this year, which is almost a 7-year record, she added.
Tsai made the remarks while attending the Entrepreneur Club presidential handover ceremony in central Taiwan’s Taichung City.
According to Tsai, when it comes to energy transition, the government is committed to expanding the use of green energy, increasing natural gas-powered units, reducing coal-fired plants, and achieving a nuclear-free country to ensure a stable power supply and the meeting of renewable energy requirements set by a number of firms worldwide for suppliers.
Tsai said ongoing efforts would strengthen the country’s international competitiveness in the post-pandemic economy as per the objectives of the six core strategic industries initiative.
Unveiled by Tsai during her inauguration address in May 2020, the initiative springboards off the five-plus-two innovative industries plan. It comprises information and digital technology, cybersecurity, biotech and medical technology, national defense, green and renewable energy and strategic stockpile industries.
