2021/03/19

Wu Kun-yung from Taiwan and Jana S. Rosker from Slovenia are the winners of the 25th Taiwan-France Cultural Award, the Ministry of Culture announced March 17 in Taipei City.

As a co-founder of the Taiwan Association of French Language Translators, Wu has been avid in his advocacy of social movements through publications, particularly with regard to issues surrounding the death penalty, according to the MOC.

Through his personal engagement with Algerian writer Kamel Daoud, French writer Chantal Thomas and Martin Legros, chief editor of the Paris-based Philosophie magazine, Wu has played an important role in introducing the contemporary French zeitgeist to Taiwan.

Wu was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture in 2018 for his contributions to promoting bilateral exchanges in humanism and literature, the ministry added.

A professor from the Department of Asian Studies at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia, Rosker has been visiting Taiwan for academic research since 1994, with a recent study focusing on the country’s contemporary philosophers and their work.

In 2019 Rosker published a series of articles discussing the role of local academics in preserving oriental philosophy, the MOC said, adding that she has also devoted herself to enhancing Taiwan-Europe cultural exchanges by promoting collegiate cooperation between Taiwan and her home country.

Established in 1996 by the MOC and the Academie des Sciences Morales et Politiques of the Institute de France, the annual award is presented to distinguished individuals or groups that have helped raise awareness of Taiwan in Europe or facilitated cultural exchanges.
