2021/03/15

President Tsai Ing-wen marked the 10th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 by attending Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara’s solo exhibition March 11 in Taipei City, spotlighting Taiwan’s close relationship with its like-minded partner.

The people of Taiwan stood together with those of Japan during the disaster 10 years ago, Tsai said. This show of support was the result of years of friendship between the two sides, the strength of which continues to grow, she added.

Tsai made the remarks during a visit to the exhibition’s opening ceremony at Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts in Taipei National University of the Arts.

According to Tsai, Nara’s exhibition was made possible thanks to the tireless efforts of many organizations including Taipei City-based General Association of Chinese Culture and the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association. It is part of a series of events marking the earthquake’s anniversary, including a special friendship exhibition, concert and market being held at Taipei’s Huashan 1914 Creative Park, she said.

The president also took the opportunity to restate the government’s commitment to energy transformation. Nuclear power has a cost, Tsai said, adding she looks forward to working with Japan on achieving sustainable development in the Pacific.
