Taiwan, US, Japan, UK stage GCTF forum on building disaster resilience

A workshop on building resilience to disasters was staged under the Taiwan-U.S.-Japan Global Cooperation and Training Framework March 10 in Taipei City, underscoring the commitment of like-minded partners to deepening cooperation in disaster prevention and mitigation.

Jointly organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction under the Ministry of Science and Technology, the American Institute in Taiwan, the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association and the British Office Taipei, the one-day workshop also marks the first time the U.K. has co-hosted a GCTF event.

According to MOFA, high-profile participants included MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu, MOST Deputy Minister Lin Minn-tsong, AIT Director Brent Christensen, JTEA Chief Rep. Izumi Hiroyasu and BOT head John Dennis, as well as members of the diplomatic corps and NGO representatives. Around 110 experts and officials from 35 countries and territories also took part via video link.

During his opening remarks, Wu said the event served as a great opportunity for Taiwan and Japan to share their experience in disaster preparedness and prevention as the two countries are both prone to natural disasters like earthquakes.

The workshop is the 3rd of its kind held under the GCTF since the framework’s launch in June 2015. Other topics addressed by the initiative include education, environmental protection, humanitarian assistance, public health and women’s empowerment, according to MOFA.
