President Tsai lauds 2020 CPBL champions amid COVID-19

2021/02/24

President Tsai Ing-wen said Feb. 22 that the Uni-President 7-Eleven Lions are worthy 2020 CPBL champions, epitomizing Taiwan’s commitment to combating coronavirus and realizing Health For All.

The Lions are integral part of the country’s baseball scene, doing much to promote the game and its culture, Tsai said. As a founding member of the CPBL in 1989, the Tainan City-based team is a firm fan favorite and pop culture institution in southern Taiwan, she added.

Tsai made the remarks while receiving players, coaches and officials from the Lions at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.

According to Tsai, this year’s championship is the club’s 10th, underscoring the effectiveness of long-standing efforts to cultivate homegrown talent. It also reflects the caliber of coaches, support staff and the roster, she added.

Tsai also took the opportunity to extend her sincere appreciation to the CPBL and its fans for complying with pandemic management measures. Adherence to protocols delivered a successful season while ensuring the health and well-being of the people, she said.

As the Taipei-headquartered CPBL marks its 32nd year with the appointment of a new commissioner and addition of a fifth team, Tsai said she expects the upcoming season to again be a showcase for edge-of-seat fixtures. It is hoped these games will inspire the public and further raise the country’s profile in the international arena, she added.
