MOFA vows continued strengthening of Taiwan-Czech Republic ties
2021/01/29
Taiwan is determined to strengthen its comprehensive democratic partnership with the Czech Republic in keeping with the shared values of freedom, democracy and human rights, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Jan. 28.
Recent years have seen Taiwan and the Czech Republic scale up joint efforts in technology, including the signing of agreements on scientific cooperation and information exchange, the ministry said.
One example includes James Liao, president of Taiwan’s leading research institution Academia Sinica, staging a virtual meeting with Czech Academy of Sciences President Eva Zazimalova to discuss best practices for combating COVID-19, it added.
The MOFA’s statement followed an announcement Jan. 27 made by Prague Mayor Zdenek Hrib and Taipei Economic and Cultural Office, Prague, Rep. Ke Liang-ruey that the city plans to expand cooperation with Taiwan in science and education post-pandemic.
According to Hrib, areas for collaboration between the like-minded partners include digitalization in education, fostering technological innovation and tackling climate change.
Echoing the mayor’s remarks, Prague councilor Vit Simral said discussions are already underway with TECO Prague on jointly organizing a high school science fair to enhance exchanges between students from both sides.
Hrib, who took part in a study abroad program in Taiwan 15 years ago, was part of the 89-member delegation from the Czech Republic led by Senate President Milos Vystrcil that visited the country last year. The trip resulted in the signing of three memoranda of understanding on artificial intelligence, startups and smart machinery cooperation.
