The government is committed to boosting homebound investment as part of efforts to advance Taiwan’s development in green energy, high-end technology and precision medical care, according to Vice President Lai Ching-te Dec. 23.
Measures aimed at bolstering these key areas of the economy are paying dividends, Lai said. This is evidenced by Taiwan’s estimated 2.54 percent 2020 growth rate based on the latest figures released by the Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics under the Executive Yuan, he added.
Such progress comes at a time when the country’s success in combating coronavirus is receiving greater international recognition, Lai said. Vaccine R&D and procurement supported by Academia Sinica—Taiwan’s foremost research institution, and the National Health Research Institutes—will further safeguard the health of the country's 23 million people and strengthen related industries, he added.
Lai made the remarks during a board meeting of Tokyo-headquartered Asia Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Taipei City.
According to Lai, the government is implementing measures across the board to further spur the economy. Case in point is the establishment of high-end manufacturing and R&D centers to advance the country’s aerospace and national defense industries, he said.
This is complemented by the promotion of smart medical care on the back of Taiwan’s information and communication technology and use of National Health Insurance system’s database, Lai said, adding that next-generation, or 5G, networks, offshore wind energy and semiconductors are other targeted sectors.
More homebound investment by Taiwan-owned businesses operating abroad in these potential-laden fields is welcomed by the government and the people, Lai said. It is expected public-private partnerships in related areas will help bolster the country’s development going forward, he added.
ATCC, established in 1993, comprises members from such economies as Cambodia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Lao, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.
