Tsai vows to shape Taiwan into smart society by boosting innovation and talent
2020/12/24
President Tsai Ing-wen said Dec. 21 that the government is sparing no effort to shape Taiwan into a smart society by fostering innovation and talent while building the country into a global hub of high-end manufacturing, technology and green energy.
Taiwan’s effective COVID-19 response has received recognition from around the world, Tsai said. Amid the intensifying technology friction between the U.S. and China, the country is also playing a vital role globally due to its prowess in the semiconductor industry, she added.
Tsai made the remarks during the opening ceremony of the 11th National Science and Technology Conference in Taipei City. Held quadrennially, the three-day event focused on healthcare, R&D and talent cultivation.
According to Tsai, the government is committed to creating a better environment for advancing R&D capabilities, including the introduction of laws and regulations aimed at boosting innovation. This is demonstrated by the five-plus-two innovative industries program launched in 2016 and the Fundamental Science and Technology Act amended in 2017, she said.
These are complemented by the six core strategic industries initiative, the president said, adding that the two policies are paving the way for Taiwan to secure a central position in global supply chains.
Unveiled by President Tsai Ing-wen during her 2020 inauguration and building on the five-plus-two innovative industries program, the six core strategic industries are set to transform Taiwan into a dynamic force in the global economy. They comprise information and digital technology, cybersecurity, biotech and medical technology, national defense, green and renewable energy, and strategic stockpile industries.
