President Tsai vows to strengthen Taiwan’s COVID-19 response, economic growth

2020/12/23

President Tsai Ing-wen said Dec. 22 that the government will continue strengthening Taiwan’s COVID-19 response while working with the private sector and citizenry in spurring economic growth.

Taiwan’s success in combating coronavirus can be attributed to the tireless efforts and unity of the people, Tsai said. This spirit of resilience and trust also played a vital role in mitigating the impact of the pandemic on the country’s economy, she added.

Tsai made the remarks during the launch ceremony of a decorated archway at a temple dedicated to Mazu, the goddess of the sea, in southern Taiwan’s Tainan City.

According to Tsai, the new structure will draw legions of devotees and tourists to the historic southern metropolis. This is certain to deepen understanding of the country’s distinct temple culture at home and abroad going forward, she said.

Tsai also took the opportunity to remind citizens to maintain heightened COVID-19 management protocols like wearing masks in public areas and washing hands, as well as to use the Triple Stimulus Vouchers before year-end.

Launched in July, the TSVs can be spent on a variety of goods and services. They are one of many government initiatives aimed at stimulating domestic economic activity amid coronavirus first reported in the Chinese city of Wuhan late last year.
