2020/12/21
The Central America pavilion was launched Dec. 17 at Food Taipei 2020, underscoring the effectiveness of government efforts in raising local awareness of signature produce and cuisine from Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
Organized by Taipei City-based Central America Trade Office in conjunction with the embassies of the four allies, the pavilion showcases a smorgasbord of food items such as hot sauce from Belize, black lemons from Guatemala, white shrimp from Honduras, beef from Nicaragua, and traditional dishes like ceviche, gallo pinto and pupusa.
According to CATO, it is anticipated the Christmas-themed pavilion will entice Taiwan consumers to look further afield when sourcing ingredients or planning new dining experiences. Food is one of the most effective means of further deepening friendship and expanding exchanges between Taiwan and Central America, the office said.
The launch was attended by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the embassies of the allies. These included Douglas Yu-tien Hsu, director general of the Department of North American Affairs; Chiu Chen-yu, deputy director general of the Department of International and Economic Cooperation Affairs; Florencia Miao-hung Hsie, ambassador of the Department of Latin American and Caribbean Affairs; Jasmine Kidd, charge d’affaires of Belize; Willy Alberto Gomez, ambassador of Guatemala; Juan Carlos Barahona, counsellor of Honduras; and Mirna Mariela Rivera, ambassador of Nicaragua.
Food Taipei, staged by Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), is the largest event of its kind in Asia. This year’s edition is expected to attract more than 1,000 participants from 16 countries and territories during a four-day run at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center Hall.
