2020/11/26

Taiwan and Jordan held a virtual meeting to discuss investment and business opportunities Nov. 24, spotlighting government efforts to deepen economic and trade relations with the Middle Eastern country, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The event co-organized by the MOFA, Taipei City-based Chinese International Economic Cooperation Association, Jordan Investment Commission and the Jordanian Commercial Office was attended by more than 60 academics, business representatives, experts and officials.

Delivering the opening remarks, MOFA Vice Minister Miguel Li-jey Tsao said Taiwan-Jordan relations have gone from strength from strength. This is evidenced by a memorandum of understanding on promoting investment inked by the two sides in 2015, he added.

Tsao also took the opportunity to encourage participants to explore new industrial cooperation opportunities, which will bring a wealth of economic benefits to both Taiwan and Jordan.

In response, JIC Chairman Khalid W. Wazani said the meeting is expected to serve as a platform attracting more investment and technology sharing between the two sides, especially in the agricultural, food processing, medical equipment and pharmaceutical industries.

Other keynote speeches included an introduction of Taiwan’s investment environment and the six core strategic industries initiative by the Department of Investment Services under the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Unveiled by President Tsai Ing-wen during her 2020 inauguration and building on the five-plus-two innovative industries program, the six core strategic industries are set to transform Taiwan into a dynamic force in the global economy. They comprise information and digital technology, cybersecurity, biotech and medical technology, national defense, green and renewable energy, and strategic stockpile industries.
