2020/11/11
Taiwan is set to donate US$100,000 to Central American ally Belize to assist with reconstruction efforts following Hurricane Eta, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nov. 9.
The storm left a trail of destruction across the region last week, causing severe flooding in northern Belize, damaging infrastructure and severely impacting the country’s people, the MOFA said.
ROC (Taiwan) Ambassador to Belize Chen Li-kuo offered sincere regards from the government and people to Belize’s Governor-General Sir Colville Young, Prime Minister Dean Barrow and Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington on behalf of President Tsai Ing-wen and MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu, the ministry added.
According to the MOFA, since establishing official ties in 1989, Taiwan and Belize have enjoyed a strong friendship, with bilateral cooperation spanning a wide variety of fields.
Belize is also a firm supporter of Taiwan’s international participation, the MOFA said, adding the government will keep a close eye on reconstruction efforts and offer all available assistance as necessary.
