Taiwan, Hungary sign education cooperation MOU
2020/11/09
Taiwan and Hungary concluded a memorandum of understanding Nov. 4 to promote education cooperation and exchanges between the two like-minded partners, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The pact was signed via videoconference by Liu Shih-chung, head of Taipei Representative Office in Hungary, and in person by Daniel Lorincz, representative of the Hungarian Trade Office in Taipei City, during a ceremony held at MOFA headquarters in the capital.
Under the pact, the government of Hungary will provide scholarships for 20 Taiwan students every year through 2023, allowing them to pursue tertiary education and short-term training programs in the European country.
During the ceremony, MOFA Deputy Minister Harry Ho-jen Tseng praised the MOU as another landmark in the two countries’ youth exchanges following the working holiday agreement signed six years ago.
According to Tseng, Taiwan and Hungary have enjoyed close relations in many important areas for decades, with Hungary the second largest destination in the EU for foreign direct investment from the Asian country. Taiwan’s Legislature also launched the Taiwan-Hungary Parliamentary Friendship Association Sept. 25 this year, he added.
In a reciprocal move aimed at further enhancing bilateral education ties, Tseng announced that the government will offer scholarships to 30 Hungarian students to study Mandarin at local language centers under the Taiwan-Europe Connectivity Scholarship program beginning next year.
In addition to showing support for the EU’s Connecting Europe and Asia
initiative, the Mandarin scholarships will enhance understanding between the two sides’ younger generations while promoting closer economic partnership, Tseng added.
