The U.S. Department of State’s Nov. 3 decision to approve the sale of a defensive weapons package worth US$600 million is sincerely appreciated by the government and people of Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nov. 4.
It is the 10th such sale to Taiwan made under the administration of President Donald Trump, as well as third in the past two weeks and fifth this year, the MOFA said, adding that the moves reflect U.S. commitment to the Taiwan Relations Act and Six Assurances.
The weapons will help Taiwan modernize its armed forces while enhancing the country’s ability to maintain cross-strait peace and regional stability, the ministry added.
In its official release, the Presidential Office thanked the U.S. for fulfilling its security commitment to Taiwan with concrete actions. The weaponry will be instrumental in meeting Taiwan’s defensive and strategic needs, and will help the country upgrade its asymmetric combat capabilities, the PO said.
According to the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency, the latest package comprises up to four Weapons-Ready MQ-9B Remotely Piloted Aircraft and related equipment. In addition to helping improve Taiwan’s security, the deal is expected to further political stability, military balance and overall progress in the region, it added.
At a time when the world is paying close attention to cross-strait and regional developments, the government will continue to defend the people’s way of life while contributing to peace and prosperity in the Indo Pacific, the MOFA said.
