The efforts and dedication of Taiwan’s eight ambassadors-at-large in promoting the country’s diplomatic work around the world are sincerely appreciated by the government and people, Minister of Foreign Affairs Jaushieh Joseph Wu said Oct. 28 in Taipei City.
These individuals are experts in their respective fields spanning digital technology, health care, religious freedom, sustainability and women’s empowerment, Wu said while hosting a banquet held in their honor on behalf of President Tsai Ing-wen.
By speaking for Taiwan at international venues, they are enhancing the country’s global visibility while promoting cooperation between local civic organizations and their counterparts abroad, Wu added.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, among the eight is Pusin Tali, the first ambassador-at-large for religious freedom, who shared the country’s faith-related achievements in the Civil Society Dialogue on Securing Religious Freedom in the Indo-Pacific Region held in March 2019 in Taipei.
Another is Dr. Wu Yung-tung, who for nearly two decades has advocated for Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Organization, including assisting members of Taiwan Medical Association taking part in the activities of France-based World Medical Association.
Appointed by Tsai in August this year for terms ending May 19, 2021, the remaining ambassadors are Chen Jen-ran, who jointly created Taiwan’s first search engine Yam; Eugene Chien, chairman of Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy; Steve Hsu-sung Kuo, former director-general of the Centers for Disease Control; Chi Cheng, bronze medal winner in the 80-meter hurdles at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games; Jan Hung-tze, chairperson of PChome Online Inc.; and Fwuerah Butalu, an indigenous priest of the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan.
