President Tsai lauds government efforts promoting renewable energy
2020/10/16
President Tsai Ing-wen said Oct. 14 that the government’s energy policies are making great strides, spotlighting efforts to turn Taiwan into a green energy development center of Asia by 2025.
Green energy is a central plank in national development initiatives such as the five-plus-two innovative industries program, and no effort is being spared in accelerating expansion of the potential-laden sector, Tsai said.
Following the success of government measures over the past four years, investments in green energy are expected to top NT$1 trillion (U$34.54 billion), with sector output totaling NT$1.2 trillion creating 20,000 new jobs in the next five years, she added.
Tsai made the remarks during her opening address at Energy Taiwan 2020 in Taipei City. Organized by Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA) and SEMI Taiwan, the three-day event features 130 local firms across over 500 booths showcasing solutions in solar energy, wind power and smart storage technologies.
According to Tsai, following the start of commercial operations at Taiwan’s first offshore wind farm in the northern county of Miaoli last year, 14 new wind farms will be completed in the next five years, making the country a leader in renewable energy generation in Asia.
To ensure Taiwan’s position, Tsai said the government will propose a clear long-term plan to promote investments and foster international cooperation in the industry. It will also work to establish a complete and comprehensive green energy supply chain and propose effective supporting measures to address the needs of the sector, including setting up a national financing mechanism and green power trading platform, she added.
Launched in 2016, the five-plus-two innovative industries program also targets the sectors of biotech, national defense, smart machinery and Internet of Things, as well as two core concepts: the circular economy and a new paradigm for agricultural development.
