4th Yushan Forum gets underway in Taiwan
2020/10/12
The fourth edition of the Yushan Forum, involving academics, experts and thought-leaders from 12 countries and regions such as Europe, Japan, the U.S. and New Southbound Policy target countries, opened Oct. 8 in Taipei City.
Organized by Taipei City-based think tank Taiwan-Asia Exchange Foundation, the daylong event themed Forging a Resilient Future Together is set to deepen cooperation among stakeholders on key issues facing democracies worldwide. These include economic recovery in the post-pandemic era, global governance and public health crisis responses.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Tsai Ing-wen and Vice President Lai Ching-te will deliver addresses during the event. They are to be joined by virtual participants like Carl Bildt, former prime minister of Sweden; Malcolm Turnbull, former prime minister of Australia; and Keiji Furuya, chairman of the Japan-ROC Diet Members’ Consultative Council.
A roundtable will be facilitated by Digital Minister Audrey Tang, while an evening banquet is to be hosted by MOFA Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu. The latter involves special remarks by Anders Fogh Rasmussen, former Denmark prime minister and NATO secretary general, and U.S. Rep. Ted Yoho, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs subcommittee for the Asia-Pacific.
The MOFA said the forum represents an outstanding opportunity for Taiwan to advance regional dialogue, as well as strengthen partnerships with NSP target countries and like-minded countries going forward.
A key plank in the government’s national development strategy, the NSP seeks to deepen Taiwan’s agricultural, business, cultural, education, tourism and trade ties with the 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations member states, six South Asian countries, Australia and New Zealand.
