2020/09/29

A total of 44 individuals and organizations were honored by President Tsai Ing-wen Sept. 27 in Taipei City for their roles in combating COVID-19, spotlighting the unsung heroes behind Taiwan’s successful pandemic response.

On behalf of the government and people, Tsai thanked the honorees for their efforts protecting the country. Due to their commitment and sacrifice, Taiwan is a safe haven at a time when many other nations are still badly impacted by the disease, she added.

According to Tsai, Taiwan has been able to manage coronavirus using its advanced technology and disease-fighting knowledge. These were backed by a transparent information environment and vibrant democratic society, she said.

Total society buy-in was one of the keys to success, Tsai said, adding the general public deserve high praise for their willingness to follow the government’s health guidelines and related measures.

According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, the honorees included medical staffers and institutions involved in caring for COVID-19 patients; firms producing and distributing disinfectant and personal protective equipment; and those running Taiwan’s quarantine system such as hotel operators, taxi drivers and volunteers.

A short film also premiered at the event documenting how the public and private sectors have cooperated to overcome coronavirus. Commissioned by the Executive Yuan, the two-minute video showcases the government’s efforts at home and abroad during the pandemic.
