MOFA, NGOs to hold women’s leadership webinars

2020/09/28

Two webinars highlighting Taiwan’s success in promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment are scheduled for the end of this month, spotlighting the country’s commitment to providing opportunity for all, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Sept. 24

Co-hosted by Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York and non-governmental organizations such as Taipei City-based Foundation for Women’s Rights Promotion and Development, the webinars are to be held ahead of the 25th anniversary Oct. 1 of the U.N.’s Fourth World Conference on Women, notable for the adoption of the Beijing Platform for Action, a comprehensive strategy to achieve gender equality.

“Women’s Leadership: Redesigning the Post-COVID-19 Era” is set for Sept. 30. Moderated by Denise Scotto, vice president and U.N. representative of France-headquartered International Federation of Women in Legal Careers, the 90-minute event will feature Hsiao Bi-khim, head of TECRO in the U.S., and Kelley E. Currie, U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues, discussing how women in positions of power can help shape the post-pandemic world.

According to the MOFA, the webinar will be livestreamed on its YouTube channel with advanced registration required through Eventbrite.

The other webinar titled “Feminists Redesigning the Post-COVID-19 Era” will be held Sept. 28-29 and include talks on gender equality strategies during the coronavirus pandemic, as well as new directions for the international women’s rights movement. Among those scheduled to attend are leaders from Thailand-based Asia Pacific Forum on Women, Law and Development; Canada-headquartered Association for Women’s Rights in Development; and U.K.-based International Federation of Business and Professional Women.

Sideline events include a Twitter campaign by FWRPD calling for international women’s organizations to take action in areas like social reform, economic justice and Health For All, the MOFA said.
