Microsoft to establish IoT Center of Excellence in Taiwan
2020/08/21
An Internet of Things Center of Excellence is set to be established by Microsoft Corp. in Taiwan, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the U.S.-based company Aug. 19.
Serving as a research venue for 5G, artificial intelligence and IoT technologies, the center will additionally provide training to cultivate local talents and enhance homegrown electronics, network communications, precision machining and semiconductor industries.
The center also heralds the second stage of an initiative aimed at upgrading IoT services in Taiwan. Co-launched by the MOEA and Microsoft in 2017, the project’s first stage has generated a production value of NT$3.64 billion (US$120 million) and a further NT$10 billion is expected during the second phase.
Vice Premier Shen Jong-chin said during his keynote speech at the DevDays Asia 2020 Online tech forum that Microsoft has played a vital role in improving Taiwan’s information technology and digital development, fast-tracking the country’s smart transformation of industrial sectors and strengthening the competitiveness of small and medium enterprises.
This is evidenced by the global software leader’s establishment of an IoT innovation center in 2016 and an artificial intelligence R&D center in 2018 to support the government’s Asia Silicon Valley Development Plan, Shen added.
Proposed by the National Development Council, the IoT-focused Asia Silicon Valley project seeks to optimize Taiwan’s startup and entrepreneurship ecosystem; construct diversified demo sites for smart products and services; enhance linkages with renowned tech clusters worldwide; and build a complete IoT supply chain in the country.
Running until Aug. 26 in Taipei City, DevDays Asia 2020 brings together local and foreign experts to discuss the latest software development trends and technologies.
