President Tsai touts AmCham Taipei’s role in Taiwan-US ties

President Tsai Ing-wen said Aug. 18 that American Chamber of Commerce in Taipei has played a vital role in strengthening Taiwan-U.S. ties.
AmCham’s recognition of the country’s pandemic prevention efforts and recommendations for economic and trade policies in its Taiwan White Paper published in June were deeply appreciated, Tsai said, adding that the government will continue working with AmCham to promote tourism and inbound investment.
Tsai made the remarks while receiving AmCham Chairman C.W. Chin at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.
According to Tsai, Taiwan’s partnership with the U.S. has gone from strength to strength. This is reflected by the signing of a memorandum of understanding on health cooperation, the launch of Taiwan-U.S Business Alliance, the establishment of Talent Circulation Alliance, and the listing of five local telecom providers as 5G Clean Telecommunications Companies by the U.S. Department of State, she added.
Tsai said the government will continue focusing on the Six Core Strategic Industries to transform Taiwan into a dynamic force in the global economy while remaining a reliable partner of the U.S. in the Indo-Pacific. Unveiled by Tsai during her 2020 inauguration, the industries comprise information and digital technology, cybersecurity, biotech and medical technology, national defense, green and renewable energy, and strategic stockpile sectors.
The president additionally stressed the importance of a Taiwan-U.S. bilateral trade agreement, which she said will further enhance the two sides’ economic exchanges and generate more business opportunities.
Established in 1951 with more than 1,000 members from 500-plus companies, AmCham is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to promoting the interests of American and international businesses in Taiwan.
