Taiwan donated 10,000 protective gowns and 10,000 N95 surgical masks to Israel-based Shamir Medical Center during a livestreamed ceremony Aug. 12 at Yunlin Branch of National Taiwan University Hospital in the western Taiwan county.
Witnessing the event, Lee Ya-ping, deputy director-general of the Department of West Asian and African Affairs under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the donation is built on the two countries’ ongoing joint efforts to combat coronavirus. It reflects Taiwan’s dedication to protecting the health of the people of Israel while ensuring the safety of front-line medical personnel, she added.
Echoing her remarks, Omer Caspi, representative of Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei, stated that the donation is a testament to two sides’ rock-solid friendship. It is expected that Taiwan and Israel will continue deepening health and medical cooperation going forward, he said.
Following the ceremony, a webinar on epidemic prevention measures and best practices for managing COVID-19 was led by Hwang Juey-jen, superintendent of NTUH’s Yunlin Branch, for Israeli counterparts at SMC with support from the MOFA.
According to the ministry, no country can fight the disease alone. The webinar serves as an example of the government’s commitment to sharing Taiwan’s widely recognized expertise with allies and like-minded partners around the world, the MOFA added.
Located 15 kilometers southeast of Tel Aviv, SMC is an academic medical center and the fourth largest government hospital in Israel. It cares for nearly half a million people and plays a vital role in combatting coronavirus in the country.
