1st locally built fast minelayer launched in Taiwan

2020/08/06

The first locally constructed fast minelayer was launched by the ROC (Taiwan) navy Aug. 4 in the northeastern county of Yilan, underscoring the commitment of the government to strengthening the country’s indigenous defense capabilities.

Built by Yilan-based Lungteh Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., the vessel boasts leading-edge naval architecture and high-tech materials. It also features state-of-the-art technology and systems developed by National Chung Shan Institute of Science and Technology headquartered in northern Taiwan’s Taoyuan City.

The minelayer meets the navy’s needs for a force capable of creating a significant underwater deterrence against amphibious assault operations. Expected to enter service by year-end, the vessel is one of four ordered by navy for delivery during 2021, according to the Ministry of National Defense.

Adm. Liu Chih-pin, commander of the navy, said the minelayer will also create more opportunities for Taiwan’s public and private sector firms servicing the defense industry. This synergy is expected to further boost the national economy and ensure inclusive prosperity, he added.

State-backed NCSIST, the primary provider of indigenous weapons systems for Taiwan, is a key player in the government’s five-plus-two innovative industries plan. The initiative is fostering the development of the biotech and pharmaceuticals, green energy, national defense, smart machinery and Internet of Things sectors, as well as the circular economy and a new paradigm for agricultural development.
