Lost and Found virtual Taiwan film series to kick off Aug. 7

2020/08/05

2020 Taiwan Film Festival’s virtual Lost and Found Series kicks off Aug. 7 with a double bill set to take audiences on a voyage of introspection while showcasing some of the country’s most sensitive cinematic offerings.

Organized by the Taiwan Film Festival of Boston with the support of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Boston, Ministry of Science and Technology, Cabinet-level Overseas Community Affairs Council and Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute, the series features at least one movie per month until year-end.

The opening selection comprises “Foolish Bride, Naive Bridegroom” by Hsin Chi and “Like Father, Like Daughter” by Chris Leong. The former is a 1967 black-and-white comedy feature deconstructing traditional standards and values of the day, while the latter is a 2019 short examining a father’s views on the decision of his daughter to pursue a same-sex relationship.

A post-screening forum helmed by Leong will draw the curtains back on the creative processes and techniques behind both movies, as well as allow the director and special guests to share filmmaking experiences.

TFFB curator Andrew Lin said this year’s lineup is rich in diversity, reflecting the multifaceted aspects of Taiwan cinema in the modern era. It also acknowledges the pain and suffering experienced by many around the world who lost loved ones as a result of coronavirus, he added.

The series is effectively a moment of respite, Lin said, adding that it also affords cinephiles the opportunity to give thanks for all the good things in life.

TFFB, established in 2019, is a nonprofit taking celluloid tales of Taiwan to the U.S. and the world.
