Forestry Bureau, WWCA to establish animal rescue center in Taitung

A rescue center specializing in Formosan black bears and pangolins will be established in southeastern Taiwan’s Taitung County, according to the Forestry Bureau under the Cabinet-level Council of Agriculture July 20.
 
 A cooperative undertaking between the bureau and locally headquartered WildOne Wildlife Conservation Association, the facility is set to significantly improve the survival rate of injured wild animals in Taitung and eastern Taiwan’s Hualien County.
 
 The center is in response to a growing public awareness of the need to care for all creatures great and small, the bureau said, adding that the number of reported injured fauna has increased twofold over the past five years.
 
 Official statistics indicate that more than 500 wild animals, many endangered and some critically, have been rescued over the same period of time. Over 50 percent were released into the wild after treatment and rehabilitation.
 
 The bureau said the facility completes a countrywide network ensuring animals receive requisite care without long transportation times. The eight other centers are located in Taipei City, northern Taiwan; Nantou County and Taichung City, central Taiwan; Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County, southern Taiwan; and outlying Kinmen and Penghu counties.
 
 WWCA was founded in 2018 by a group of researchers and veterinarians in Taitung. It is a nonprofit dedicated to providing emergency support for sick, injured and orphaned native animals.
