Taipei City was named Asia’s best leisure destination in the 2020 Leisure Lifestyle Award survey released June 26 by U.S.-headquartered Global Traveler, a magazine geared toward businesspeople.

The result marks the third straight year Taipei has claimed the top spot in the annual rankings. Other cities finishing in the top five were Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo and Thailand’s Phuket, in that order.

Taiwan was also voted the second best international adventure destination, trailing only South Africa and followed by India, Thailand and New Zealand. The country’s Taoyuan International Airport was named the fourth best airport in the world for layovers, finishing behind Miami International Airport, Singapore Changi Airport and Doha Hamad International Airport, with Munich Airport rounding out the top five.

According to the Tourism Bureau, the rankings are a strong vote of confidence in Taiwan and reflect the country’s increasing popularity among global travelers. The government has a variety of promotional campaigns underway spotlighting local attractions, the bureau said, adding that success managing the coronavirus pandemic has boosted interest among tourists at home and abroad.

Conducted between Oct. 1, 2019 and Jan. 31, 2020, the survey examined various categories including beaches, cruise lines, cruise ports, historical attractions, hotel chain resorts, luxury leisure hotel groups, tour operators and ski destinations.
