Taiwan eases entry regulations for foreign nationals
2020/06/30
Taiwan’s entry regulations for foreign nationals changed June 29 as part of government efforts to gradually reopen the country while spurring economic activity in the post-pandemic new life.
Travelers planning to visit Taiwan for reasons other than tourism and regular social visits can apply for a permit at overseas offices, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. Applications by students and those who wish to study Mandarin must comply with Ministry of Education conditions, the MOFA added.
In addition, all nonnationals are required to present English-language negative COVID-19 test certification issued within three days of flying to Taiwan and undergo a 14-day home quarantine, the ministry said.
Exemption of this requirement is extended to diplomatic personnel, migrant workers and students whose entry is managed by the MOFA, the Ministry of Labor and the MOE, respectively, as well as vessel crews and those facing emergency humanitarian emergency situations, according to the MOFA.
The move follows the decision of the Central Epidemic Command Center June 22 to allow foreign nationals visiting Taiwan for short-term business from low- and low-to-moderate risks countries and territories to apply for a reduction in mandatory 14-day quarantine.
Taiwan closed its borders to most foreign nationals March 19 in an effort to combat coronavirus. Exceptions were made for those holding a valid resident certificate or taking part in approved business, diplomatic or other special missions.
