MAC unveils action plan to support Hong Kongers
2020/06/20
The Mainland Affairs Council launched an action plan June 18 to support Hong Kongers’ pursuit of freedom and democracy while offering assistance to those wishing to contribute to Taiwan.
During a press conference in Taipei City, MAC Minister Chen Ming-tong said the action plan is in response to a planned move by China to impose a national security law on Hong Kong. The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to human rights and unwavering care for the people of Hong Kong, he added.
According to Chen, a dedicated office will begin operation July 1 offering consultations to businesses and organizations planning to relocate to Taiwan. It will also provide expedited services to individuals hoping to conduct business, make investments, reside or study in the country, as well as offer necessary assistance to those whose safety and liberty are threatened for political reasons, as specified in the Laws and Regulations Regarding Hong Kong and Macao Affairs, Chen said.
Located in Taipei, the office will operate under the supervision of the Taiwan-Hong Kong Economic and Cultural Cooperation Council, a government-backed organization established in 2010 to handle communications with the Hong Kong authorities, according to the MAC.
