VP Lai visits PPE manufacturer Makalot Industrial
2020/06/11
Vice President Lai Ching-te paid a visit June 9 to the R&D center of Makalot Industrial Co., a major producer of personal protective equipment, in southern Taiwan’s Chiayi County, highlighting contributions by the private sector during the coronavirus pandemic.
Makalot has a track record of providing vital equipment to the medical sector like during the 2003 severe acute respiratory syndrome outbreak, Lai said. These efforts and those of other unsung heroes have been key to Taiwan maintaining no locally transmitted coronavirus infections for the past eight weeks, he added.
According to Lai, Makalot was one of the first enterprises to respond to a Ministry of Economic Affairs request for increased PPE production, with the company quickly ramping up its capacity. This ensured a steady supply of protective garments suitable for up to biosafety level 3, he said.
Lai, who worked in medicine before becoming a politician, said he was impressed at the quality and variety of items manufactured by Makalot. These include a piece of clothing featuring an integrated device for monitoring the wearer’s cardiovascular system, which can be used for real-time analysis of health status during telemedicine consultations.
Founded in 1990 in Taipei City, Makalot is one of Taiwan’s largest producers of PPE. It currently employs over 33,000 people working at facilities at home and abroad in countries including Cambodia, China, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam.
