Chunghwa Telecom becomes 1st Taiwan company to obtain 5G license

2020/06/09

Chunghwa Telecom Co. has been awarded the first license for offering 5G telecommunication services in Taiwan, Cabinet-level National Communications Commission announced June 3.

According to the NCC, five local mobile service providers, all based in Taipei City, competed in two rounds of auctions for the right to operate 5G networks earlier this year. The total bidding amounted to NT$142.19 billion (US$4.74 billion), far exceeding the target of NT$44 billion set by the commission.

Among these, CHT spent NT$47.76 billion (US$1.59 billion) for 90MHz in the 3.5GHz band and NT$618 million for 600MHz in the 28GHz band. The company is expected to launch its upgraded services in July at the earliest, the NCC said.

Far EasTone Telecommunications Co. offered NT$42.63 billion for 80MHz in the 3.5GHz band and NT$412 million for 400MHz in the 28GHz band. The NCC said it will issue a license this week if the company’s progress is determined to meet all requirements.

Taiwan Mobile Co. came in third in terms of investment at NT$30.66 billion, followed by Taiwan Star Telecom Corp. with NT$19.71 billion and Asia Pacific Telecom Co. with NT$412 million.

The NCC said the higher data capacity and rapid response time of 5G technology will open up new avenues for a fully connected society, with the potential to revolutionize Taiwan’s industrial landscape.

The commission said it will continue monitoring progress of the five companies as they build up their respective networks to ensure consumers receive quality services.
