A public square-cum-lagoon situated in southern Taiwan’s Tainan City was named May 9 as one of the world’s top 10 new architecture projects in an article published by U.K.-based The Guardian.
Tainan Spring, which opened March 7, is constructed on the site of an abandoned shopping mall. It is the largest structure of its kind in the city, and a firm favorite with residents and visitors alike.
The “bold and direct response,” according to the article, is the brainchild of MVRDV—a Netherlands-based studio specializing in creating innovative solutions to contemporary architectural and urban issues.
Highlights of Tainan Spring include an artificial lagoon and cooling vapor mists. The former changes levels with the season, while the latter activates when temperatures are high.
The underlying concept of the project is to encourage the growth of luxuriant vegetation and return the site within three years to a state resembling the natural conditions of the area before human settlement.
Other structures named world’s top 10 new architecture projects are Beirut’s Stone Garden, Paraguay’s UHP synagogue, Senegal’s Fass school and teachers’ residence, and Spain’s Mac House.
