Premier Su reappointed for Tsai’s second presidential term

2020/05/11

President Tsai Ing-wen announced that she would reappoint Su Tseng-chang as premier for her upcoming second term as president of the ROC (Taiwan) during a news conference May 8 at the Presidential Office in Taipei City.

Su, who was chosen by Tsai for the job in January 2019 following the resignation of Vice President-elect Lai Ching-te as premier, was praised by Tsai for his outstanding effectiveness and efficiency in implementing government policies.

Over the past year, Su has skillfully managed initiatives pertaining to African swine flu, legalization of same-sex marriage, subsidies for replacing aging vehicles, homebound investment by Taiwan businesses operating overseas and the Long-term Care Plan 2.0, an initiative aimed at building a community-based medical care network, Tsai said. His steady support in dealing with emerging challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic have proved invaluable, she added.

In response, Su thanked Tsai for her trust and the opportunity to continue serving the people of Taiwan.

His life-long goal is to help Taiwan shine on the world stage and earn recognition in the international community, Su said, adding that he will spare no effort in bolstering key policies while charting a safe course for the country at a time of great international and domestic change.

At age 72, Su was reappointed as premier earlier this year after the victory of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party in Taiwan’s presidential and legislative elections. Prior to leading the Cabinet, he was secretary-general to President Chen Shui-bian from 2004 to 2005; magistrate of Taipei County, now New Taipei City, 1997 to 2004; and magistrate of Pingtung County in southern Taiwan, 1989 to 1993.

Tsai was re-elected Jan. 11 with 8.17 million votes, defeating Han Kuo-yu of the major opposition party Kuomintang. Her inauguration, which will proceed in accordance with recommendations from the Central Epidemic Command Center, is set to take place May 20.
