Rice cookers, canned food donated to Holy See by Taiwan
2020/04/29
Taiwan donated 1,440 cans of tuna, 1,440 cans of pineapple and three rice cookers to the Holy See April 27 in response to Pope Francis’ appeal to help the homeless amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the donation ceremony held in front of St. Peter’s Basilica, Taiwan’s Ambassador to the Holy See Matthew S. M. Lee presented the items to papal almoner Konrad Krajewski, who thanked the government and its people for their generosity. One of the rice cookers, which has a 60-serving capacity, will be used by the Office of Papal Charities to feed those in need.
According to Krajewski, Taiwan has been a leading provider of humanitarian assistance following the pope’s calls. The food items will help to prepare nutritious meals, he said.
Adversity shows us who our true friends are, Ambassador Lee said, highlighting the support Taiwan has given its ally since the COVID-19 pandemic began. The country understands the hardship coronavirus has caused among vulnerable populations and hopes its contributions can help alleviate the impact, he added.
The donation follows previous contributions of 280,000 surgical masks April 9 and 200,000 surgical masks April 22 aimed at helping protect front-line medical workers and members of the Roman Catholic Church.
