NCKU aquatics expert honored by World Organisation for Animal Health

Professor Lo Chu-fang from National Cheng Kung University in southern Taiwan’s Tainan City was recognized March 22 by Paris-headquartered World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) for her efforts in advancing shrimp disease research.
 
 The Department of Biotechnology and Bioindustry Sciences chair, who has dedicated 20-plus years to combating white spot syndrome, is considered one of the world’s authoritative voices on the highly contagious and lethal virus. Her research is viewed as instrumental in helping breed and farm disease resistant shrimp while promoting the industry’s sustainable development.
 
 Lo said she is humbled to be named recipient of OIE’s 2020 Meritorious Award, and looks forward to accepting the honor during the General Session of the World Assembly of Delegates May 24 to 29 in the French capital. WAD—the highest authority of OIE—meets at least once per year and comprises 182 members.
 
 Founded in 1924 OIE is an intergovernmental organization responsible for various activities and functions relating to animal health, research and welfare. It collaborates extensively with the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization and World Health Organization in critically important areas like information sharing on epidemic notification and outbreak management.
