Taiwan to share disaster prevention practices, technologies with Japan
2020/03/13
Taiwan’s National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction (NCDR) and Japan’s National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience signed a memorandum of cooperation on disaster prevention and preparedness March 10 in New Taipei City.
Under the five-year pact, NCDR under the Ministry of Science and Technology will assist the Japanese institution by sharing information on disaster management best practices. The deal also includes data from monitoring and response systems for earthquakes, floods and landslides.
NCDR Director Chen Hongey said the memorandum is the latest in a series of collaborations between the two facilities. Taiwan and Japan are both at risk from natural disasters, he said, adding the agreement will play a key role in developing technologies to mitigate the impact of such events in both countries.
Echoing Chen’s remarks, NIED President Haruo Hayashi said Taiwan is renowned for its expertise in disaster management. The deal will allow for further exchanges between experts on both sides and provide mutual benefits, he added.
Founded in 2003, NCDR coordinates and collaborates with the government for planning, organizing and promoting innovation, providing a platform for information service and technology integration, designing the policies of disaster prevention, disseminating alerts during emergencies and conducting post-disaster investigations.
