2020/03/12
Two charter flights carrying 361 Taiwan nationals and their family members from the Chinese city of Wuhan, where a new coronavirus was first discovered late last year, touched down March 10 and 11 at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.
All passengers underwent health screening on arrival, with none found exhibiting symptoms associated with COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus. They were later dispatched to three facilities for a 14-day mandatory quarantine, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center.
All returnees are to be tested for COVID-19 within 48 hours, the CECC said, adding that they will stay in single rooms and receive checkups twice daily.
This is the third evacuation of Taiwan nationals since the virus outbreak began, following flights Feb. 3 and Feb. 21 respectively carrying 247 individuals from Wuhan and 19 from the virus-stricken Diamond Princess cruise ship in Yokohama, Japan.
Taiwan reported a new COVID-19 case March 11, a woman in her 30s who visited the U.K. at the start of the month and began exhibiting related symptoms the day after returning to Taiwan, the CECC said.
A total of 48 cases of the disease have now been confirmed in Taiwan, with one death, while 80,778 cases have been identified in China and 37,156 in 107 other countries and territories.
