2020/03/05

A total of 12 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 have been released from hospital in Taiwan after recovering, according to the Central Epidemic Command Center March 3.

The CECC said since the country’s first case—a female national returning from Wuhan—was confirmed Jan. 21, around 12,400 individuals have been tested for the new coronavirus initially reported in the Chinese city late last year.

Among these, 42 tested positive with 19 infected outside Taiwan. These include 11 who travelled to Wuhan, a family of four who traveled to Italy and transited in Hong Kong, and one from the virus-stricken cruise ship Diamond Princess, the CECC said.

One charter flight evacuating 247 Taiwan nationals and their family members from Wuhan arrived at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport Feb. 3, while another one carrying 19 passengers and crew members from the Diamond Princess returned to the country Feb. 21. Two passengers, one from each flight, later tested positive for the virus.

Taiwan reported its first death from COVID-19 Feb. 15 when a taxi driver in his 60s tested positive post-mortem. The man is believed to have been exposed carrying a passenger returning from China in late January. The remaining 29 hospitalized cases are stable and in isolation wards, the CECC said.

Latest statistics by the CECC show that 80,270 cases of COVID-19 have been identified in China, with 11,748 in 75 other countries and territories.
