Taiwan to deepen cooperation with UK research council

2020/02/19

Representatives from U.K.-based Economic and Social Research Council met with officials from Taiwan’s Ministry of Education Feb. 6, spotlighting government efforts to deepen academic cooperation between the two countries.

Bi Cheu-an, director-general of the MOE’s Department of International and Cross-strait Education, warmly welcomed the six-member delegation, praising the U.K. as one of the top destinations for local students looking to receive higher education abroad. The meeting is part of Taiwan’s efforts to encourage advanced R&D and elevate its competitiveness in the international arena, he added.

Paul Nightingale, a professor at U.K.-based University of Sussex and director of strategy and operations at ESRC, lauded Taiwan’s excellence in the social sciences and looked forward to increasing collaboration in the future. The visit will help foster understanding between the two sides’ academic communities, he added.

ESRC, part of U.K. Research and Innovation, is the European country’s largest organization funding academic exploration of social and economic issues, supporting more than 4,000 researchers and postgraduate students each year. The council facilitates partnerships between British social scientists and preeminent international academics.
