MOFA minister flies flag for Taiwan at Guatemala presidential inauguration

Foreign Minister Jaushieh Joseph Wu attended the inauguration of Guatemala President Alejandro Eduardo Giammattei and Vice President Guillermo Castillo Jan. 14 in Guatemala City.
 
 Special envoy of President Tsai Ing-wen and head of the Taiwan delegation, Wu congratulated Giammattei and Castillio on behalf of the government and people. It is the country’s sincere wish for the pair to enjoy every success during their tenure, he said.
 
 According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wu’s visit underscores the importance the government places on maintaining excellent relations with Central America partner Guatemala. It further illustrates a commitment to deepening friendship and expanding cooperation projections across an array of core areas benefiting the people, the MOFA said.
 
 Giammattei, who visited Taiwan as president-elect in October 2019, boasts generational ties to the country. His father defended Taiwan’s right to remain part of the International Olympic Committee while serving as president of the Guatemalan Olympic Committee.
 
 The day before, Wu met with outgoing Guatemala President Jimmy Morales and praised him for working to advance economic growth and prosperity in his country and across the region. He also thanked Morales for his friendship and staunchly supporting Taiwan and its 23 million people over the years.
 
 Other highlights of Wu’s visit include meeting numerous regional leaders such as Honduras President Juan Orlando Hernandez, Paraguay Vice President Hugo Velazquez, Belize Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber and Central American Integration System Secretary General Vinicio Cerezo.
 
 According to the MOFA, participants in all of Wu’s meetings congratulated Tsai on her reelection and lauded the country as a beacon of freedom, democracy and human rights.
