ROC (Taiwan) citizenship granted to 8 foreign professionals
2019/12/31
Eight more high-level foreign professionals have been granted ROC (Taiwan) citizenship without having to relinquish their original nationalities, according to the Ministry of the Interior Dec. 27.
The eight—specializing in education, medicine, economics and technology—include professionals from Canada, Indonesia, Malaysia, Poland, Singapore and South Korea.
Exceptional achievement is a common theme among the new citizens, the ministry said. These include a Malaysian medical expert who helped Taiwan gain international recognition thanks to breakthrough research on preventing thrombosis-related complications using niclosamide, a drug conventionally employed for tapeworm infestations.
Another new citizen is a biochemist from Malaysia who won the Wu Ta-you Memorial Award in 2018 and Chemical Society Located in Taipei Outstanding Young Chemist Award in 2016.
Equally impressive is an Indonesian doctor who has worked tirelessly to improve long-term care of patients with diabetes and thyroid diseases through his work as an assistant professor at a local university.
According to the MOI, 119 foreign professionals have so far been naturalized under amendments to the Nationality Act promulgated in 2016 enabling foreigners meeting certain conditions to obtain ROC (Taiwan) citizenship while retaining their original nationality.
