Winners of the Arts Education Contribution Award were announced Dec. 23 at National Central Library in Taipei City, spotlighting the efforts of the country’s educators and institutions in developing the next generation of creative talent.
Organized by the Ministry of Education, the award was given across five categories for outstanding private institutions, schools and teaching; special contributions to education; and lifetime achievement.
Standout winners included Huang Kuang-nan, chairman of Tainan Art Museum, and Wu Lung-jung, president of Taipei-based Chinese Children Arts Education Society, who received the lifetime achievement award for their work promoting local art activities and international cultural exchanges.
Among the winning institutions was Nantou County-based Chin-ai Music Orchestra from central Taiwan, which has helped inspire young people in one of the country’s most remote locations. It was joined among the winners by outstanding schools Jiangjun Elementary School, Chungpu Junior High School and Linnei Junior High School based in southern Tainan City, Chiayi County and Yunlin County, respectively.
Teaching awards went to Hung Chien-yu, a creative art teacher at Taipei Municipal Yucheng High School, and Tsai Ping-yu, who has taught for more than 20 years at New Taipei City-based Ziqiang Elementary School.
The final category, special contribution to education, was won by Chen Po-jen, CEO of Taipei-based Taiwan Film Organization, for his tireless promotion of domestic films to the local community around SPOT Huashan cinema in the nation’s capital.
According to the MOE, winners were judged by a panel of experts and officials through a rigorous selection process. Their dedication to the field of arts education speaks volumes for Taiwan’s society, serving as an inspiration for others around them, the ministry added.
