SingularityU APAC Global Impact Challenge winners honored in Taipei

2019/12/17

Winners of the SingularityU APAC Global Impact Challenge were honored during a ceremony staged by Taiwan Tech Arena, the country’s No.1 startup incubator, Dec. 13 in Taipei City.

The 10 finalists, selected out of a 70-strong field from across the Asia-Pacific, successfully pitched cutting-edge solutions utilizing the power of artificial intelligence in improving the quality of human life.

Seven of the teams are from Taiwan, while the rest hail from New Southbound Policy target countries India, Malaysia and Pakistan. A key plank in the government’s national development strategy, the NSP seeks to deepen Taiwan’s agricultural, business, cultural, education, tourism and trade ties with the 10 Association of Southeast Asian Nations member states, six South Asian countries, Australia and New Zealand.

Local entrant KiWi New Energy claimed top honors with an online renewable energy investment platform employing blockchain technology. The team will attend challenge co-organizer Singularity University’s global startup program in the U.S. with full support from the Ministry of Science and Technology.

Four teams won TTA Special Awards: MangaX Technology from Taiwan; Studio 1 Labs, Taiwan; Turing Chain Ltd., Taiwan; and Cordoba Ventures, Pakistan. Each qualifies as a TTA member enjoying full access to the organization’s facilities and services for three months.

MOST Deputy Minister Hsu Yu-chin said the challenge, now in its second year, plays a key role in spurring innovative and socially responsible strategies for tackling the big issues facing humankind. The government will work with the winners in giving them every opportunity to take their concepts to market and create related business opportunities, he added.

TTA is an initiative advanced by the MOST. Since its launch in 2018, the Taipei-headquartered organization has successfully fostered high-tech entrepreneurship in core Taiwan sectors like mobile communications, semiconductors and software, as well as connected local firms with overseas counterparts.
