GCTF Joint Committee staged in Washington

2019/12/17

The annual Global Cooperative Training Framework Joint Committee concluded Dec. 6 in Washington, with representatives from Taiwan, Japan and the U.S. reviewing the initiative’s annual progress and charting the route for the year to come.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the one-day meeting also involved senior officials from the Ministries of Justice and Health and Welfare, American Institute in Taiwan and Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association.

Attendees included Stanley Kao, head of Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the U.S.; Jonathan Fritz, deputy assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs responsible for China, Mongolia and Taiwan coordination; AIT Deputy Director Raymond Greene; and JTEA Deputy Representative Shigehiro Nishiumi.

In addition to examining the outcomes of the various events staged under the platform this year, participants also discussed ways to further expand the initiative and set priorities for future cooperation.

To encourage participation by more like-minded countries and enhance capacity building among regional partners, the three countries will focus their cooperation on key areas such as the digital economy, internet freedom, law enforcement, marine waste management and public health, the MOFA said.

Since its launch in June 2015, the GCTF has hosted more than 450 experts, officials and representatives from 38 countries and territories across 22 international workshops covering topics such as energy security, humanitarian assistance, media literacy and women’s empowerment, among other issues.
