Team Taiwan won six gold medals to finish second behind India at the 16th International Junior Science Olympiad Dec. 3-12 in Doha, Qatar.
Led by Lo Pei-hua, an associate researcher at National Taiwan Normal University’s Science Education Center in Taipei City, the team comprises Chen Pin-hsi and Tu Kai-hsiang from Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School, Hsu Hung-jui from National Chiayi Senior High School in southern Taiwan, and Huang Ting-hung, Liu Li-wen and Huang Chih-hsuan from National Tainan First Senior High School in southern Taiwan.
The six members, part of 400-plus field of students from 70 countries and territories aged 15 years or younger, outperformed in solving interdisciplinary problems spanning core areas of biology, chemistry, physics and geosciences.
Minister of Education Pan Wen-chung was quick to welcome the result, sending a message congratulating the team and praising the individual performances of its members.
Taiwan places a premium on science education. The government supports an array of talent development initiatives such as elementary and high school science fairs, as well as themed science camps, according to the Ministry of Education.
These undertakings have helped Taiwan top IJSO rankings 10 times since the inaugural edition in 2004, producing a medal haul of 83 golds and 13 silvers.
