Taiwan stage show set to raise curtain at Paris Autumn Festival

The stage show “Dear Life,” a collaboration between Taiwan’s National Theater and Concert Hall and Taipei City-based Shakespeare’s Wild Sisters Group, is set to feature at this year’s Paris Autumn Festival.
 
 Sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, the production is inspired by Alice Munro, the Canadian writer who won the 2013 Nobel Prize for Literature. It premiered at the 2018 Taiwan International Festival of Arts and left a lasting impression on PAF Artistic Director Marie Collin, who visited the event.
 
 Set in different districts of contemporary Taipei, “Dear Life” comprises four short tales telling the stories of ordinary men and women whose lives are suddenly changed.
 
 According to director Wang Chia-ming, the production incorporates many Taiwan-specific elements, including Daoist temples and architecture designed to convey the feeling of modern life in the country.
 
“The greatest challenge adapting this production for performance abroad has been depicting the personalities of the main characters and their experiences for an audience that may be unfamiliar with Taiwan,” he said.
 
 The play is scheduled for Nov. 28-30 at Maison des Arts de Creteil and Dec. 4 at Le Phenix National Performing Arts Centre, according to the MOC.
 
 Launched in 1972, the PAF is an annual event dedicated to contemporary arts and the convergence of disciplines spanning cinema, dance, music, theater and visual arts. Held between September and December, it involves around 50 events and welcomes 250,000 spectators from around the world.
